PRETZEL CITY SPORTS PRESENTS A TRAIL RUN WITH A LITTLE BIT OF EVERYTHING; THE 11TH ANNUAL
8M (more or less) TRAIL RUN
SUNDAY, JULY 13, 2014 9 AM
RUSTIC PARK, BIRDSBORO, PA
In memory of Michael Chobot; trail runner, award winning sound engineer, a person who celebrated his eccentricity and our dear friend. Point scoring race in Trail Runner Magazine's National rankings and in the USA T & F Mid Atlantic Off-Road Series
Michael Chobot, for the 26 years that he was here, was often considered to be somewhat of a “weird duck”. How ironic that he got this “tag”, since he was nominated for a 2013 Emmy in sound for a wildlife documentary entitled “Duckumentary”. But this “tag” was appropriate because Michael not only marched to the “beat of a different drum”, he marched to the beat of a whole different orchestra, polka band, mixed chorus and kazoo. He developed a taste for Baked Beans over Egg Noodles when he was a struggling sound tech in NYC since he found both on sale at the same time and he could buy outrageous quantities at bottom dollar prices. He refused to drink anything but chocolate milk on his 21st Birthday, maybe the ONLY day at Penn State that he DIDN’T have a beer in his hand. He toted a backpack with him everywhere containing oddities like a compass, astronaut food, a 1 lb bag of rice, a space blanket, twine, waterproof matches, a Swiss army knife and other things that only Michael could see the need to have with him at all times. He once carried a queen sized mattress overland for 2 miles on his back instead of using a truck available to him just to see if he could do it. Even up until the day we lost him in 2013, Michael wasn’t just a “brother” or “son” or “sound engineer” or “trail runner” or “Penn Stater”, he was a little bit of “everything”. And the Chobot Challenge, on some of the same Berks County trails where Michael learned to run, is a little bit of “everything” too! It has long climbs that end in scenic overlooks, & long downhills where you’ll be grabbing for tree trunks to slow you down. It passes one of the prettiest sites in Eastern PA; a site known to very few of those that even live in this area. It has 4 creek crossings; SURE to bring you relief from the hot July sun. It has some rocky sections and some trails smoother than a baby’s butt! It has everything from single track to fire lanes, with a beautiful creekside start and finish with a covered pavilion, playground, modern bathrooms, shower, etc. on hand too. And naturally, it has all the other race aspects that make Pretzel City Sports the top trail running organization in the East. Come on out and run the type of trails that brought Michael so much joy and happiness, cause they’re sure to bring YOU joy and happiness as well! LEGAL LINGO: YOU RACE AT YOUR OWN RISK & ARE SOLEY RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR WELFARE WHILE RACING! These trails are cleaner than Mr. Rodger’s rap sheet but if you get banged up like one girl in 2013, drag your wound to the next aide station so we can figure out where to skin you. Worried about getting lost? Stevie Wonder could follow this trail! Since trail races can be a little challenging, entry is discouraged for 1) runners under 18 (16 & 17 yr. olds OK only if a parent is present, 12-15 yr olds OK only if running with a parent) 2) people who still use a VCR for ANYTHING or 3) anyone who thinks they look really “cool” because they now use a high tech “electronic cigarette”.
